To clean the flow cell with nitric acid
1. Remove the flow cell from the detector housing. See
on
page 28
or
"Removing the Standard Analytical Flow Cell Assembly"
Removing the flow cell from the detector prevents possible leaks from harming the
mechanical and electronic components of the detector.
2. Ensure that the column is removed from the chromatographic system to avoid column
degradation.
3. Connect the outlet from the chromatographic pump to the flow cell inlet.
4. Flush the cell with water to prevent a reaction between the last solvent used in the
chromatographic system and the cleaning solution.
5. Prepare a 20% (vol/vol) solution of nitric acid in HPLC-grade water.
CAUTION Do not use a syringe to force acid solutions through the flow cell.
Pressurizing the flow cell can cause a leak or rupture and result in a dangerous and
uncontrolled acid spray.
CAUTION Before you pump cleaning solutions through the flow cell, do the
following:
• Remove the LC column from the chromatographic system.
• Pump HPLC-grade water through the flow cell.
6. Pump the nitric acid solution through the flow cell.
7. To remove all traces of nitric acid, pump 25 to 40 mL of water through the flow cell.
Monitor the pH of the outlet stream of the flow cell to ensure that you have completely
flushed the acid out of the flow cell.
8. Reinstall the flow cell. See
