Governor Lever Reset Adjustment

GOVERNOR LEVER RESET ADJUSTMENT
WARNING
• To prevent injury or vehicle damage, perform the governor reset procedure prior to starting or running
the engine.
• To prevent engine overspeeding, the governor and high speed RPM must be adjusted correctly.
Engine overspeeding could result in engine damage, personal injury or property damage.
1.
Disable the vehicle. See Disabling the Vehicle on page 1-3.
2.
Disconnect battery and spark plug wire(s). See Disconnecting the Battery – Gasoline Vehicles on page 1-4.
3.
Raise the cargo bed and secure with the bed locking pin. See Cargo Bed, Section 4, Page 4-20.
4.
Remove the exhaust pipe heat shield.
5.
Detach spring(s) and unbolt or detach accelerator cable from throttle bellcrank. See following NOTE.
NOTE: Later models have a second spring attached to a unique bolt that is taller and grooved.
6.
Disconnect the choke cable from the carburetor (Figure 13-32, Page 13-16) and (Figure 13-33, Page 13-16).

Loosen governor lever nut (1) (Figure 13-34, Page 13-17).
8.
Push governor lever (2) toward carburetor until carburetor is at full throttle and hold lever at this position. See
following CAUTION.
CAUTION
• Do not bend governor link (3) or distort governor lever (2).
9.
Using a flat-tip screwdriver, rotate governor shaft (4) counter-clockwise as far as it can turn and hold shaft at this
position. Tighten governor lever nut (1) to 70 in-lb (8 N·m).
10. Attach the accelerator cable and spring(s). If cable is secured with a bolt, tighten bolt to 35 in-lb (3.9 N·m). Adjust
cable if necessary. See Accelerator Cable Adjustment – Through Early-2012 Model Year on page 5-7 or
Accelerator Cable Adjustment – From Early-2012 Model Year on page 5-12.
11. Attach and adjust the choke cable (Figure 13-32, Page 13-16) and (Figure 13-33, Page 13-16).
12. Install the heat shield and tighten the hardware to 78 in-lb (8.8 N·m).
13. Place bed locking pin in the stowed position and lower the cargo bed (Figure 13-12, Page 13-6).
