SECTION 16 – FRONT DIFFERENTIAL AND HALFSHAFTS

This section contains information on removing and installing the front differential.
NOTE: An open front differential is used through early-2012 model year. It was replaced by an auto-locking front
differential and include to the following additional changes:
• Halfshafts change because the front differential switched from male splines to female splines.
• Controls change because the front differential switched from a cable to an electric switch to engage
the front wheels.
• Transaxle changed because a different PTO ratio is required to drive the auto-locking front differential.
• Oil changed from 80W90 Gear Oil to Mobil 424, Exxon Hydraul 560, or Esso Hydraul 56 lubricant.

FRONT DIFFERENTIAL REMOVAL

See General Warning on page 1-2.
1.
Disconnect battery and spark plug wire(s). See Disconnecting the Battery – Gasoline Vehicles on page 1-4.
2.
Loosen the lug nuts on the front wheels.
3.
Lift and support front of vehicle with jack stands positioned under the outboard ends of the front frame cross
member for greatest stability. See Lifting The Vehicle, Section 3, Page 3-4.
4.
Remove the front wheels.
5.
Using a pickle fork or similar, pry the passenger side front half-shaft free from the cir-clip on the differential output
shaft, but do not attempt to remove the half-shaft at this time (Figure 16-1, Page 16-1).
6.
Repeat the above step for the driver side front half-shaft (Figure 16-2, Page 16-1).
