STEERING AND FRONT SUSPENSION

WHEEL ALIGNMENT

Wheel alignment only consists of adjusting the toe-out of the front wheels. See Toe-Out Measurement on page
7-7. See following NOTE.
NOTE: Unlike most vehicles, this vehicle is intended to have toe-out.
Before any front suspension adjustments are made, inspect components for wear or damage and repair or
replace as necessary.
Toe-Out Measurement
1.
On a level surface, roll the vehicle forward, then stop. Make sure the front wheels are pointed straight ahead.
See following NOTE.
NOTE: Do not turn the steering wheel again during this procedure.
2.
Mark each front tire at the center of the tread face that is facing the rear of the vehicle. The marks should be at
the same height as the center of each hub. Measure the distance between the marks.
3.
Roll the vehicle forward one-half wheel revolution until the marks appear on the forward facing surfaces of the
tires at the same height as the center of each hub. Measure the distance between the marks (Figure 7-8,
Page 7-7). See following NOTE.
NOTE: The front measurement must be more than the rear measurement.
4.
Subtract the rear face tire measurement from the front face tire measurement. Proper toe-out is 5/16-inch
(7.9 mm) ± 9/64-inch (3.6 mm).

Toe-Out Adjustment
1.
Loosen the jam nuts on both ends of each tie rod (Figure 7-9, Page 7-7).
2.
Rotate both of the tie rods equally. To decrease the toe-out, rotate both tie rods counterclockwise. To increase the
toe-out, rotate both tie rods clockwise. Maintain an equal distance from the ball joint to the end of the threads
on each tie rod (Figure 7-10, Page 7-8).
3.
Tighten the jam nuts to 21 ft-lb (28 N·m).
4.
Check toe-out again, and repeat the adjustment procedure if necessary.
5.
After the toe-out adjustment is complete, ensure the steering wheel is at the center of its travel. If not, remove and
correct the position so it is as close to center as possible. See Steering Wheel on page 7-1.
