Four-Wheel Drive Cable Adjustment – Through Early-2012

CAUTION
• To prevent cable damage, do not attempt to pry the cable end from the ball stud on the transaxle lever.
Disconnect the shifter cable end and four-wheel drive cable end (if equipped) from the transaxle by
pulling the locking sleeve back and lifting the socket off the ball stud (Figure 17-6, Page 17-2) and
(Figure 17-7, Page 17-3).

Disconnect battery and spark plug wire(s). See Disconnecting the Battery – Gasoline Vehicles on page 1-4.
2.
At Shifter: Loosen ball joint socket jam nut and screw socket onto cable end threads until it bottoms out.
3.
Thread jam nut against ball joint socket and tighten to 55 in-lb (6.4 N·m).
4.
Connect socket to shifter lever.
5.
At Transaxle: Loosen ball joint socket jam nut and screw socket onto cable end threads until it bottoms out.
6.
Place shifter control in NEUTRAL position.
7.
Adjust cable retention nuts, at shifter cable bracket, to align ball joint socket with ball stud on transaxle lever.
8.
Connect socket to lever.
9.
Tighten cable retention nuts to 28 ft-lb (38 N·m).
10. Thread jam nut against ball joint socket and tighten to 55 in-lb (6.4 N·m).
11. Connect battery and spark plug wire(s). See Connecting the Battery – Gasoline Vehicles on page 1-4.
12. Verify cable functions as intended.
FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE CABLE ADJUSTMENT
– THROUGH EARLY-2012 MODEL YEAR
See General Warning on page 1-2.
NOTE: An open front differential is used through early-2012 model year and is engaged by the four-wheel drive cable.
It was replaced by an auto-locking front differential that is engaged by an electric switch.
CAUTION
• To prevent cable damage, do not attempt to pry the cable end from the ball stud on the transaxle lever.
Disconnect the shifter cable end and four-wheel drive cable end (if equipped) from the transaxle by
pulling the locking sleeve back and lifting the socket off the ball stud (Figure 17-6, Page 17-2) and
(Figure 17-7, Page 17-3).

At Shifter: Loosen ball joint socket jam nut and screw socket onto cable end threads until it bottoms out.
2.
Thread jam nut against ball joint socket and tighten to 22.5 in-lb (2.6 N·m).
3.
Connect socket to shifter lever.
4.
At Transaxle: Loosen ball joint socket jam nut, remove socket and thread socket eight turns onto cable end
threads.
5.
At instrument panel, place shifter control in NEUTRAL position.
6.
At transaxle, place lever in the four-wheel drive engaged position.
7.
Adjust cable retention nuts, at shifter cable bracket, to align ball joint socket with ball stud on transaxle lever.
8.
Connect socket to lever.
9.
Tighten cable retention nuts to 22.5 ft-lb (30.5 N·m).
10. Thread jam nut against ball joint socket and tighten to 22.5 in-lb (2.6 N·m).
