Attaching and Removing the Expansion Backplane
This section describes how to attach and remove the expansion backplane from the A3100
chassis. The following figure shows the rear of an A3100 chassis with an expansion backplane
attached.

The expansion backplane contains all signal connectors and an electronic asset tag for the
A3100 chassis. You can remove the expansion backplane component from the A3100 chassis,
for example, if you need to convert to an A3000 chassis to use A1010 blades. Similarly, you
can upgrade an A3000 chassis by attaching an expansion backplane. This enables the chassis
to accept A1410 blades.
CAUTION: A1010 blades are compatible with A3000 chassis only.
Attempting to install an A1010 blade in an incompatible chassis
could damage the blade.
Attaching the Expansion Backplane
Perform the following steps to attach the expansion backplane to an A3100 chassis.
1. Ensure that neither of the two AC power cords are connected to the chassis. If either AC
power cord is connected, remove it.
2. From the rear of the chassis, insert the hooks on each side of the expansion backplane into
the slots on each side of the chassis, then gently lower the backplane until it rests on the
