WATER PUMP

DESCRIPTION
DESCRIPTION - 2.0L/2.4L
The water pump has a diecast aluminum body and
housing with a stamped steel impeller. The water
pump bolts directly to the block (Fig. 35) and is
driven by the timing belt. Cylinder block to water
pump sealing is provided by a rubber O-ring.

DESCRIPTION - 2.7L
The 2.7L pump has a die cast aluminum housing
and a plastic swept vane impeller. It bolts directly to
the cylinder block, behind the timing chain cover
(Fig. 36). The water pump is driven by the back side
of the engine's primary timing chain.

DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - WATER PUMP

To determine whether coolant is flowing through
the cooling system, use one of the following proce-
dures:

PREFERRED METHOD
WARNING: DO NOT REMOVE THE COOLING SYS-
TEM PRESSURE CAP OR ANY HOSE WITH THE
SYSTEM HOT AND UNDER PRESSURE BECAUSE
SERIOUS BURNS FROM COOLANT CAN OCCUR.
• 2.0L/2.4L: Remove pressure cap when engine is
cold. Remove small amount of coolant. Idle engine
until thermostat opens. You should observe coolant
flow while looking down the filler neck. Once flow is
detected install the pressure cap. Replace removed
coolant into coolant recovery container.
• 2.7L: Start engine, coolant flow should be
observable in coolant pressure container when rev-
ving the engine.
ALTERNATIVE METHOD
• If engine is cold, idle engine until normal oper-
ating temperature is reached. Feel the upper radiator
hose. If it is hot, coolant is circulating.
