6.1.3
Process Overview: 802.1Q VLAN Configuration
Use the following steps as a guide to configure VLANs on the device:
1. Reviewing existing VLANs
2. Creating and Naming VLANs
3. Assigning port VLAN IDs and Ingress Filtering
4. Configuring VLAN Egress
5. Setting the host VLAN
6. Enabling / Disabling GVRP (GARP VLAN Registration Protocol)
Purpose
To assign switched network ports to VLANs, define new VLANs, configure port filtering according
to a VLAN list or untagged frames, and configure the GVRP function on the device.
Preparing for VLAN Configuration
A little forethought and planning is essential to a good VLAN implementation. Before attempting
to configure a single switch for VLAN operation, consider the following:
•
How many VLANs will be required?
•
What stations will belong to them?
•
What ports are connected to those stations?
•
What ports will be configured as GVRP-aware ports?
It is also helpful to sketch out a diagram of your VLAN strategy.
