Waste Toner Sensor

The waste-toner collection unit includes a waste toner sensor. The waste toner
sensor consists of a photo-emitter, on the left side [A], and a photoreceptor, on the
right side [B]. There is an interrupter [C] located in front of the photo-emitter. The
interrupter monitors both the presence of the waste toner bottle and if it the bottle is
near full or full. (The interrupter interrupts light when the waste toner bottle is not
set correctly.)
When you set the waste toner bottle in the waste toner collection unit, the waste
toner bottle pushes the interrupter (actuator). The interrupter then moves out of the
sensor's light path. Now if the bottle is empty, the light emitted from the sensor
passes through the waste toner bottle. At this time, the light receptor receives the
light. When the waste toner bottle is nearly full, waste toner blocks the light. At this
time, the receptor does not receive the emitted light, and a message is displayed.

Messages

This machine uses only one sensor (the waste toner sensor) to detect the waste
toner bottle and the quantity of waste toner. But the machine can show different
messages when this sensor is interrupted. The table lists the messages, conditions,
and possible causes.

Near-Full and Full

When the waste toner bottle becomes almost full, the machine displays the
message "Waste Toner is Almost Full." From this point, the machine can make 200
developments. The machine will not print until the waste toner bottle is replaced
after it has made the 200 developments.
