Questions and Answers

The purpose of this Q&A section is to cover hardware problems, you should use this information to direct
you to a faults diagnosis. More information about software and hardware issues can be found in the on-
line knowledge base.
POWERING UP
1. I have plugged in the power and nothing happens,
§
Make sure the unit is able to receive power. See the 'Power Check' section.
2. I've checked the power supply unit and it's delivering the correct voltage to the motherboard but still
nothing happens.
§
Follow the procedure for checking the motherboard, see the 'Motherboard Check' section. If
you are not getting any video output including the VGA and composite ports from the mother-
board then substitute it for a known working the motherboard.
3. How long does it take for the unit to fully start.
§
On average it takes about 3 minutes to reach the main menu. However, the boot sequence
may take longer if the power was disconnected without shutting it down correctly. In these
circumstances the software may perform a disk check to clarify the integrity of the data which
can take between to 15-30 minutes.
A disk check may also be performed during boot-up if it has not been checked in a while. The
most simplest way of determining if a disk check is running is to listen to the hard disk(s) for
constant read/write activity or disk chatter. If there is no disk activity for a long period of time
and the unit has not fully started then this suggests that there is a software or hardware prob-
lem.

The front panel LCD display will show 'x Starting...' until shortly before the unit reaches the
main menu.
4. What are the sequence of events as the units starts?
§
On applying the power to the unit the front panel display will show 'x Starting', where x is the
product name.
§
The temperature controlled fan should spin for about 2-3 seconds and the 'XiVA' splash screen
will appear on the TV and/or VGA monitor.
§
After a few seconds the TV interface will go blank.
§
Within 5-10 seconds the first hourglass will appear.
§
About two and half minutes into the boot the front panel will go blank, display the products
name and the hourglass will be updated on the TV.
§
Finally, around three minutes the front panel and TV interface will display the products name
and either 'Menu' or 'Register'.
5. The boot sequence has reached the product name on the front panel but does not give me a menu
option after several minutes.
§
Switch over the hard disk(s) from a known working unit to determine whether it is a problem
with the software or hard disk(s). If it starts with the replacement hard disk(s) then the main
hardware appears fine. However if the same problem exists then it's a hardware issue.
§
Check all the cables are securely fitted, especially the CDROM drive and check it's jumper
setting as this has been known to cause it.
§
You will now need to start substituting the hardware components and cables, start with the
