Replacing a Version 1 Fan Tray in the Cisco ASR 9922 Router with a Version 2
Fan Tray
Cisco IOS XR software release 5.2.2 introduces support for the version 2 fan tray in the
Cisco ASR 9922 Router chassis. The version 2 fan tray allows the router to support high-power optics
that operate at 1.5 W. When at least one version 2 power tray is installed in each half of the
Cisco ASR 9922 Router, the system removes the restriction on high-power optics. If at least one version
2 fan tray is installed in FT0 or FT1, and at least one version 2 fan tray is installed in FT2 or FT3, then
high-power optics can be installed on any port on any slot.
Ensure that there are sufficient power modules installed in the chassis to power the four version 2 fan

trays at full speed.

18 pounds (8.16 kg). Each Cisco ASR 9922 Router version 2 fan tray weighs about
27 pounds (12.25 kg).
At this point the fans in the remaining version 1 fan tray in that half of the chassis will go to full speed.
Note
The fans in the other half of the chassis will continue to operate normally. For example, if FT0 has been
removed from the chassis, then FT1 will go to full speed and FT2 and FT3 will continue to operate at
their normal speed.
