The printer includes the font Code 39 Bar Code: also called Code 3 of 9, which is a full
alphanumeric character set that includes unique start and stop characters and seven additional
characters. Each Code39 character has three wide elements out of a total of nine elements. The
nine elements consist of five bars and four
spaces.
Code 39 Structure
Every Code 39 Bar Code consists of a
leading quiet zone, a start character,
alphanumeric characters representing data,
a stop character and a trailing quiet zone.
Code 39 Encoded Information
Each Code 39 character consists of a series
of thin bars, thick bars and spaces, each
represented by five bars and the four
intervening spaces. The characters are separated by an
inter-character gap.
Each bar or space is either one of two widths, referred
to as "wide" and "narrow". The particular pattern of
wide and narrow bars or spaces determines the
character being encoded. Every character consist of
thee wide and six narrow elements.
Start & Stop Characters [ * (asterisk)]
The unique start and stop character * (asterisk) is used to identify the leading and tailing ends of
the code 39 bar code. This character shall be used only at the beginning and the end of the
symbol.
Quiet Zones [space (sp)]
Quiet zones are spaces (SP) and must precede the start character and must follow the stop
character. Quiet zones should be at least the width of one space at 10 cpi.
Printing with Code 39
To utilize the Code 39 bar code font the printer control code must be entered in the software to
call the font. Once the font is called a space (SP) must be entered. The space should be followed
by the start character * (asterisk). Then send the data to be encoded as a code 39 bar code. End
the data with the stop character * (asterisk) followed by a space (SP).
Use the following PCL printer escape ( ) command to call the Code 39 font "
