6.4 Relay Functions

Your Model 9930 has the ability to initiate Relay jobs.
Relaying allows you to perform a number of powerful communication links, i.e.:
• request a Simple (or Single Node) Relay from your unit (the Originator),
through a second fax machine (Node), and on to a third fax unit (or Final
Destination).
• request a Dual Node (or Single Node) Relay from your unit (the Originator),
through a second fax machine (Node 1), through a third unit (Node 2) and on
to a fourth fax machine (Final Destination).
Usually, during Relays, the document sent from the Originating fax unit does not
print at each step along the way. It only "passes through" each forwarding (or
Relaying) unit. The document eventually prints only at the Destination unit(s).
As with more complex features like Mailboxes, it is recommended that a Key
Operator or System Administrator set up the Relay capabilities with other fax Key
Operators. Careful assignment of Speed Dial Numbers and One Touch (List)
Numbers are essential for accurate faxing using Relay jobs. Coordination with
remote sites is required to keep lists and report generation accurate.
6.4.1 Single Node Relay (Simple Relay) and Dual Node Relay (Two Step
Relay Concepts)
The Model 9930 allows you to initiate two kinds of Relays — the Single Node
Relay (Simple Relay) and the more complex Dual Node Relay (Two Step Relay).
For the purposes of this Guide, a Node is defined as another fax machine (or
multiple fax machines) at a remote location(s). Think of a Node as a "step" along
your communications route.
A Single Node Relay permits an originating fax unit to send a document through
another fax unit or through a group of other fax units (Relaying Stations or
Nodes).
Then the document continues on its transmission route to pre-
programmed destinations included in the Speed Dial numbers or One Touch Keys
of the Relaying machine(s). The Final Destination would probably be many units.
A Dual Node Relay permits the same communications as a Single Node Relay,
but it allows one additional step. The Originating fax unit can send a document
through one or several fax units (Relaying Stations or First Nodes).
document is then routed, per instructions given at the Originating fax unit, through
Second Nodes (secondary Relay Stations) and then on to one or many
destinations pre-programmed in the Speed Dial Number or One Touch Keys of
the Second Node unit(s). The document then arrives at the Final Destination(s).
