Setting the Answering Mode

Setting the Answering Mode
Your fax machine has a number of answering modes which determine how it handles incoming calls (both
fax and voice). The current answering mode appears on your fax machines standby display.
Answering Mode Options
The answering mode which is best for you will vary depending on how you use your fax machine and
what external telephone devices are connected to it. Read through the answering modes listed here, then
follow the instructions below.
Manual Receive Mode [TEL]: If you use the same line for both fax and telephone calls and the majority of
your incoming calls are telephone calls, then the TEL answering mode is your best choice. Each time
someone calls, your fax machine will ring like a telephone. You can answer from either an external
handset or from an external telephone connected to your fax machine. If you pick up the handset and
hear fax machine tones, press the Start key to receive the fax. If you do not answer the phone and
someone tries to send you a fax message, your machine will not accept it.
Auto Receive Mode [FAX]: If your fax machine is connected to a telephone line reserved only for fax
communications, use the Auto Receive mode. Your fax machine will assume all incoming calls are fax
messages and automatically receive all incoming fax messages.
Telephone/Fax Mode [T/F]: When incoming calls are a mixture of fax and telephone calls, your best
choice is the Telephone/Fax mode. In this mode, your fax machine detects whether the incoming call is a
fax or voice call. When the call is from another fax machine,Installation 33 your machine will switch to fax
mode and receive the message. When the call is a voice call, your fax machine will ring like a telephone.
If you do not answer, your fax machine will switch back to fax mode to allow the calling party to manually
send a fax.
Telephone Answering Device Mode [TAD]: Use this mode if you want your fax machine and telephone
answering machine to share the same phone line. Like Telephone/Fax mode, the Telephone Answering
Device mode detects whether an incoming call is a fax or voice call. See Connecting an External
Telephone and Answering Machine earlier in this chapter for more information.
There are two types of settings in TAD mode. In type 1, your fax machine will detect if the incoming call is
a voice or fax message. If it is a fax, your fax machine will seize the line from the answering machine to
receive the fax message. If it is a voice call, and no one answers the call, the answering machine will
activate. After leaving a message, the fax machine will go on-line so that the caller can send a fax if he
chooses to do so.
In type 2, your answering machine will pick up the call first, so that the caller can leave a message. If
your fax machine does not detect another fax machine calling, it will return to standby mode.
Tip:
The Telephone Answering Device mode is normally turned on, and set to type 2 (see the
previous paragraph for an
explanation). To have it turned off, contact your dealer.
PC Interface Mode [PC]: If you have purchased the optional PC Interface Board for your fax machine,
this mode turns on the connection between your fax machine and a personal computer. Refer to the
documentation you received with your PC Interface Board option for details.
