Referencing Your Power Meter to a Source
When working with a reference power value, your power meter displays
the loss of the fiber under test only, because the reference power is
subtracted from the measured power.
Note: You must set a separate reference power value for each wavelength.
When the source you are using is equipped with a feature, that allows
transmission of a power value, such as Auto-wavelength and
Auto-switching modes, you do not have to go through all the steps of
manual referencing. The power and the wavelength are automatically set
in the power meter. If the source does not have such a feature, you have to
reference the power meter manually.
The value sent is not the actual power of the source. It is a
user-defined value that may not take the optical link's loss into
account.
To reference the power meter to a source capable of transmitting
a power value:
1. Connect the source to your power meter (with or without a fiber under
test).
Note: When using this feature, you cannot change the power meter's wavelength
manually. The power meter behavior is totally determined by the source.
Note: When the power meter receives a reference power from the source, it emits
a sound signal.
2. Turn on the source.
3. From the source, send the reference power to the power meter.
For more information, refer to the user guide of your source.
