During all work on the airbag system, such as
the installation and removal of airbag parts for
other repairs, it is possible that parts of the
airbag system may be damaged. This may result
in the airbags not working or not working
properly in the event of an accident.
To ensure that the effectiveness of the airbags
is not impaired and that dismantled parts do
not cause injury or pollute the environment,
the regulations must be observed. These
regulations are known to Volkswagen dealers.
An alteration to the vehicle's suspension may
compromise the function of the airbag system
in an impact. For example, using a wheel/tyre
combination which has not been approved by
Volkswagen and which causes a lowering of the
vehicle by altering the stiffness of the
suspension, including the springs, spring arm,
shock absorber, etc., may cause a change in
the reaction of the airbag sensors which send
the information to the electronic control unit.
Some modifications to the springs may, for
example, cause changes in the suspension and
consequently alter the reaction of the sensors
and trigger the airbag system in impact
scenarios, in which the airbags would normally
not be triggered if the modifications had not
been made. Other modifications may change
the reaction measured by the sensors and
prevent the airbag from being triggered if it
needs to be activated.
