Fig. 210 Batteries contain toxic substances and
must be recycled. Disposal with household waste is
therefore prohibited and the battery must be
returned to the dealer after replacement.
Charging the vehicle battery
Charging of the vehicle battery must be carried
out by a specialised company, as the factory-
installed vehicle battery technology requires a
restricted charging voltage.
. Volkswagen recommends Volkswagen
Dealers for this purpose.
Replacing the vehicle battery
The vehicle's battery is specially designed for its
location and has safety features. If you need to
replace the vehicle's battery, you should ask a
Volkswagen dealer about the electrical
compatibility, charging capacity (A/h)
appropriate to the vehicle's characteristics, size
and maintenance requirements, performance
and safety of the new battery before
purchasing a new one.
Volkswagen recommends having the vehicle's
battery replaced by a Volkswagen Dealer.
Disconnect the battery from the vehicle
If the vehicle battery needs to be disconnected
from the vehicle's electrical system, observe the
following:
– Switch off the ignition and all electrical
consumers.
– Unlock the vehicle before disconnection,
otherwise the alarm system will be
triggered.
– First disconnect the negative cable and then
the positive cable
If the vehicle needs to be immobilised for a
long period of time, disconnect the negative
battery cable from the vehicle, as otherwise the
battery may be discharged by the current
consumers in the vehicle, preventing the engine
from starting.
Connecting the vehicle battery
– Before reconnecting the vehicle battery,
switch off the ignition and all electrical
consumers.
– First connect the positive cable and then the
negative cable
.
In the event of problems with starting and idling,
switch on the ignition for 30 seconds and then
switch it off. Immediately start the engine.
After connecting a vehicle battery and switching
on the ignition, different control lamps can be
switched on. These go out after a few seconds. If
the indicator lights continue to illuminate, have
the vehicle checked by a Volkswagen dealer or
a specialist company.
If the vehicle battery has been disconnected for
a long time, the next service may not be
displayed or calculated correctly.
→ Observe the maximum permissible
maintenance intervals
Vehicles with Keyless Access: If, after
connecting the vehicle battery, the ignition
cannot be switched on, unlock and lock the
vehicle from the outside. Then try to switch the
ignition on again. If the ignition still cannot be
switched on, find a Volkswagen dealer or a
specialist company.
Automatic disconnection of consumers
By means of intelligent grid management, various
measures are taken to prevent the vehicle's
battery from being drained in the event of a high
demand on the vehicle's battery.
The vehicle's battery is not discharged:
