The rotation of the main motor is first transmitted to the registration clutch,
and then is transmitted to the by-pass feed clutch [A] via several idle gears.
The feed roller shaft [B] and the pick-up roller [C] turn together because they
are engaged by the idle gear [D]. One of the gears [E] between the
registration clutch and the by-pass feed clutch is used to drive the separation
roller shaft [F] (see the above illustration). This shaft is always turning when
the main motor is on.
When the start key is pressed, the pick-up solenoid [G] is energized at the
same time as the main motor, and the pick-up roller lowers to make contact
with the top sheet of the paper stack. Shortly after that, the by-pass feed
clutch turns on, and the pick-up roller and the feed roller start moving the top
sheet of paper. When the lead edge of the paper passes between the feed
roller [H] and the separation roller [I], the pick-up solenoid de-energizes to lift
up the pick-up roller. The feed roller stops turning a certain time after the
registration sensor detects the lead edge of the paper, causing a little buckle
between the feed roller and the registration rollers.
In case of using the LCT, after the trailing edge passes under the pick-up
roller, the pick-up roller lowers onto the paper stack again in preparation for
the next copy cycle. In case of using the by-pass feed table, when the
registration sensor detects the trailing edge of the paper, the pick-up roller
lowers.
