The ATTO FastStream VT allows configuration of storage into one or two JBOD, RAID Level 0, 1, 1+0 or 5 Virtual
Tape Libraries (VTL).
The FastStream VT appears to hosts as a tape library,
allowing ISV packages to issue a set of tape library
commands to perform backup and restore operations
to the FastStream.
The FastStream VT configures your storage into one
or two Virtual Tape Libraries (VTL) depending on the
choices you make.
For every Virtual Tape Library created on the
FastStream VT, an underlying RAID Group is created
from the selected drives to provide the physical
storage medium for the Virtual Tape cartridges.
You may initially use either the Quick Configuration
or Custom Setup .
Quick Configuration : quickly generates a Virtual
Tape Library after you answer a few key questions.
The procedure uses all attached Fibre Channel disks
to build a single VTL. If you want to initially create more
than one VTL, use custom setup. You may modify this
configuration after initial setup. If you have initialized
and verified drives, modified the system configuration,
or already created a VTL, the Quick Configuration
option is not available.
Custom Setup : allows you to configure the
FastStream VT to best suit the needs, performance
and level of reliability for your application. If you want
to initially create more than one VTL, use custom
setup.
Although you may change the configuration later,
changing configuration erases data and may affect

CAUTION
Selecting Commit during configuration
causes all previous storage data on the
drive to be erased. Make sure all of your
information is backed up.

Hot Spares

During the set up process you are asked if you wish to
add Hot Spares. You may set up Hot Spares now or
you may set up a pool of Hot Spares later. Refer to
FastStream operations: adding or removing Hot
Spares
on page 30 for instructions.
When you set up Hot Spares, the ATTO FastStream
VT replaces degraded or faulted drives in a VTL
without intervention by you or a host.
Drives in the Hot Spare pool should be of appropriate
size to the RAID group so that smaller drives are not
replaced by much larger Hot Spare devices.
When the ATTO FastStream VT detects a faulted
drive:
• The Controller searches the Hot Spare pool for
the smallest drive of sufficient size to substitute
for the faulted drive.
• The FastStream replaces the faulted drive with
the drive from the Hot Spare pool.
• The FastStream begins an automatic rebuild of
the RAID groups.

From the Initial Setup page, select Quick
Configuration .
The FastStream scans your system for devices.
The Quick Configuration page appears listing
the number of devices and the total amount of
storage on those devices.
