1.6-inch hard disk subsystems
SCSI configurations
The SCSI IDs for the hard disk drives are not set on the drive itself, but rather
are determined by the slot on the SCSI backplane.
The slots of the hard disk drives lead to up to two SCSI backplanes with four
hard disk drive mounting locations each. In the basic configuration, both SCSI
backplanes are connected in series to a channel (1-channel version); however,
each of the controller's SCSI channels can be connected to one SCSI
backplane (2-channel version).

Internal SCSI configurations (1-channel version)

1-channel version with onboard SCSI controller (standard)
The server has one 2-channel onboard Ultra3 SCSI controller. One of the
channels is connected with the eight internal hard disk drives.
In this case, the two SCSI backplanes are connected together over the SCSI-IN
and SCSI-OUT connectors.
The second SCSI channel is connected to the internal Ultra Wide SCSI bus for
the accessible 5¼-inch drives.
1-channel version with disk array controller
A disk array controller is installed into a PCI slot and connected with the eight
internal hard disk drives.
In this case, the connection to the SCSI channel on the onboard Ultra3 SCSI
controller must be changed to the disk array controller.
The free SCSI channel on the onboard Ultra3 SCSI controller can be used for
external hard disk drives (optional: see also section "Upgrading second SCSI
backplane (1-inch HD subsystems)" on page 104).
The second SCSI channel of the onboard Ultra3 SCSI controller remains
available for the accessible 5¼-inch drives.
Supplementary channels of the disk array controller are available for external
hard disk drive systems.
