The ComPoint in the AP Mode
Parameters like visibility of the ComPoint, authentication, and
encryption are set here. These settings are used for security rea-
sons in terms of tracking, eavesdropping, and intrusion of unau-
thorized clients.
You should set the AP visibility to Invisible and set the WEP to 128
bits, provided that all clients operated in the wireless network can
work with these settings. A RADIUS server offers additional pro-
tection.
AP Visibility
Visibility Status
Visible means that the ComPoint sends its SSID in regular intervals.
On the one hand, this makes it easier for new clients to find the net-
work via the scan function, on the other hand, attacks on the wireless
network can be carried out more easily. We recommend activating
Invisible, and thus hiding the wireless network.
Caution:
If you are using Site Survey, e.g. Netstumbler or the Windows XP Zero
Configuration Utility, the ComPoint will not be identified if you have
switched the AP Visibility to Invisible.
Encryption
Encryption Method
Here, you can choose between none, WEP,, WPA-PSK, or WPA Enter-
prise. If you activate WEP or WPA-PSK, you have to enter the same
WEP keys or WPA pass phrases in the access point and the connected
stations.
WPA Enterprise offers the highest security level. This option is rather
suited for enterprises, since it requires a central authentication server.
Private users should use the WEP encryption method or rather WPA-
PSK, which provides a higher degree of security.
WEP Configuration
WEP is an encryption standard for wireless LANs. You should
activate WEP to increase the protection of your network against
eavesdropping.
