If the sensor light passes through the cut in the rotary flag, which is interlocked with the suction cap cam shaft, the printer recognizes that all suction caps are open (all suction caps open state).
Page 205
BJ-W9000 Part 4: Technical Reference Pump sensor The pump sensor, a photo interrupter-based sensor, detects the operating state of the pumps in the purge unit. If the sensor light passes through the cut in the rotary flag, which is interlocked with the pump selection cam shaft, the printer recognizes that all pumps are in the halt state (not operating).
Page 206
Part 4: Technical Reference BJ-W9000 Pump valve sensor The pump valve sensor, a photo interrupter-based sensor, detects the open/closed state of the pump valves. The tubes that are not used for supplying color inks are pressed by the pump valves to block the ink flow.
Page 207
BJ-W9000 Part 4: Technical Reference C/M/K air valve sensor The C/M/K air valve sensor, a photo interrupter-based sensor, detects the open/closed state of the air valves for cyan, magenta, and black inks. If the sensor light passes through the cut in the rotary flag, which is interlocked with the C/M/K air cam shaft, the printer recognizes that all the air valves (C, M, and K) are open.
Page 208
Part 4: Technical Reference BJ-W9000 Blade sensor The blade sensor, a photo interrupter-based sensor, detects the rotating position of the wiper blade when the wiper motor operates in the normal rotation. In the normal rotation mode of the wiper motor, if the sensor light passes through the cut in the rotary flag, which is interlocked with the wiper blade shaft, the printer recognizes that the wiper blade is at the standby position.

Page 211
BJ-W9000 Part 4: Technical Reference Print position sensor The print position sensor, a photo reflection sensor, reads the reflection density from the print position adjustment pattern as well as the surface of the printing paper. The voltage measured in the sensor varies proportional to the reflection density from the pattern or the paper, through which the print position or the paper width is determined.
Page 212
Part 4: Technical Reference BJ-W9000 Nozzle check sensor The nozzle check sensor, a photo transmission sensor, detects whether a specific nozzle of the BJ print head's nozzle array is spraying ink correctly. When the carriage arrives at the location for detection, it stops and the ink is jetted from one nozzle of the nozzle array at a time until all the nozzles are checked for their normal ink ejecting operations.
Page 213
BJ-W9000 Part 4: Technical Reference Internal temperature sensor The internal temperature sensor (thermistor), installed on the right side of the carriage, detects the temperature in the vicinity of the carriage. The resistance value measured by the thermistor, which changes as the temperature inside the printer alternates, is converted into a temperature value via the A/D converter.

The sensor light is blocked by the sensor arm when the paper is fed from cassette A, demonstrating the paper is available and being conveyed correctly.
Page 217
BJ-W9000 Part 4: Technical Reference Skew sensor The paper skewing photo reflection-based sensors, detect skewing of roll media paper. The two skew sensors are installed in parallel near the location where the right end of the paper traverses. These sensors detect paper skew by receiving the light reflected from the paper surface.
Page 218
Part 4: Technical Reference BJ-W9000 Pressure roller sensor The pressure roller photo interrupter-based sensor, detects the open/closed (release/pressing) state of pressure roller unit. When the pressure roller is closed, the sensor light is blocked by the rotary flag interlocked with the pressure roller cam shaft, and the printer recognizes that the pressure roller unit is in the pressing mode.
Page 219
BJ-W9000 Part 4: Technical Reference Manual paper end sensor The manual paper end photo reflection-based sensor, detects whether or not the cut sheet is in the manual feed slot, and also detects the end of the cut sheet.
