4. Appendix: Software Upload

The process of performing a software upload to the probe involves the following steps:
1. Obtain the software image.
2. Export and save the probe configuration.
3. Delete an existing probe stream recording
4. Transfer the image to the probe using the software upload functionality in the
Data view (if upgrading from version 4.5 or later) or by using ftp (upgrading
from older software versions). Save the image to flash.
5. Wait while the software is being saved.
6. Verify the new image.
Step 1: Obtain the software image
When upgrading a probe running software 4.2 or later, the combined software image
file with extension .tea2 can be used, irrespective of hardware version. If the probe is
upgraded from an earlier version, it will be necessary to upgrade in two steps: first
upgrade to the 4.5 software and then to the newest software. In the first upgrade it
will be necessary to use a software image matching the probe hardware version.
The image will have extension .tea or .tea2, .tea2 being a combined software image
for HW1, HW2 and HW3. Version number, build date and possibly hardware version
should be part of the file name. As an example, gbprobe_hw1-2_420-15_14dec09.tea
is the 4.2.0-15 software release built 14. December 2009, valid for HW1 and HW2. The
software gbprobe_420-15_14dec09.tea2 may be used for all hardware versions. Note
however that probes running software older than 4.2 cannot recognise this combined
software image, and dedicated software for HW1/HW2 or HW3 should be used when
upgrading from an older version.
When upgrading from an older version than 4.2 one should either determine the probe
hardware and select the appropriate software image, or simply try to upload one
image and then use the other one if the probe responds with an error message to the
first one. Trying to upload the incorrect software version will not harm the probe in any
way.
For probes running software version 3.7 or older it is safe to assume HW1 or HW2.
One may upload the software without checking hardware version, and in this case the
gbprobe_hw1-2... image should be tried first. If the software image is incorrect the
probe will respond with an error message similar to this:
