The device's enclosure is a cPCI-based chassis providing a compact, rugged 19-inch rack
mount unit, 2U high (3.5" or 89 mm), designed to meet NEBS level-3 requirements. The
device is a four-slot chassis (four front and rear slots) that houses VoIP communication
blades, synchronization and alarm blades, and rear transition modules (RTM). The front
and rear blades interface through a backplane located in the middle of the chassis. The
device's chassis' modular design allows easy add and replacement of modules such as Fan
Tray and Power Entry modules. All shelf modules (i.e. blades, power supplies, and fans)
are hot-swappable, allowing component replacement while the system is fully operational
with no disruption to service.
The Mediant 3000 can operate in one of the following system modes:
Simplex mode, whereby gateway redundancy is not provided - houses only one set of
blades (one VoP communication blade, one Synchronization and Alarm blade, and
one or two RTMs).
High Availability 1+1 (HA), whereby gateway redundancy is provided if one gateway
module fails. In this mode, the device houses two VoP communication blades (one
Active and one Redundant/Standby), two RTMs, and two Synchronization and Alarm
blades. The Mediant 3000 hardware design contains redundant modules for every part
of the system, including redundant network connectivity, comprehensive switchover
processing and backup data storage and access, as well as applicable load-sharing
schemes. To achieve HA, the software also resides on redundant components and
performs the following:
Monitors system components to detect any hardware failures
Handles the switchover procedures to overcome possible failures
