Troubleshooting Overview
Introduction
This section covers general problems that may occur with the printer. Malfunctions
that trigger system error messages can be caused by human error, a system
malfunction, an interface cable malfunction, mechanical printer malfunction and/or
printer firmware failure.
Definition
Operator-recoverable Errors
Operator-recoverable errors are problems that interfere with the print process but do
not shut down the printer completely. Typically, these errors are problems that
prevent starting a printing job or that interrupt the current print. You should be able
to fix these errors without a service call. In most cases, the printer itself informs you
what is wrong by displaying an error message on the control panel. Check these
common error messages and apply the appropriate remedy.
System Errors
System errors stop the printer and prevent operation until the error is resolved.
System errors generally require a service call to resolve although sometimes a reboot
will work.
Printer Error Code Structure Explained
When the printer generates an error it will be in the format xx-x-xx followed by an
appropriate message. This section explains what the codes in the message mean and
will help you to respond accordingly. A CAS group is a location-based designation
that relates to a particular area of the printer. The more important number in terms of
responding to errors is the middle single digit, which signifies the type of error. Error
types 3, 5, 7 and 9 might be solved by the Operator, but if you are not sure how to
proceed, place a service call. You will not likely see a 0 or 1 error since they usually
cause the printer to power down. You might see them if you can examine the error
log, but fatal errors nearly always require a service call.
Error Code Structure: aa-d-ee (e.g., 02-5-16)
aa:= CAS Group
d:= error type *
ee:= sequence number within error types
* Error types (d):
0:= FE Fatal Error Printer powers off or where safety of printer or operator is
compromised.
1:= PE Permanent Error Power stays on but printer will not print. Restarting will
not recover functional operation.
