WS4 Technical Overview

DP83815 10/100 Mbps PCI Ethernet Controller

DP83815 10/100 Mbps PCI Ethernet Controller

U12, a National Semiconductor Corporation DP83815 Ethernet Controller, consists of
a MAC/BIU Media Access Controller/Bus Interface Unit), a physical layer interface,
SRAM, and miscellaneous support logic. The MAC/BIU includes the PCI bus, BIOS
RAM and EEPROM interfaces, and the 802.3 compatible Transmit and Receive
MAC.
The BIU is compliant with PC 97 and PC 98 Hardware Design Guides, PC 99
Hardware Design Guide draft, ACPI v1.0, PCI Power Management Specification
v1.1, OnNow Device Class Power Management Reference Specification.
Wake On LAN (WOL) support compliant with PC98, PC99, SecureOn, and
OnNow, included directed packets, Magic Packet™, VLAN packets, ARP
packets, pattern match packets, and PHY status change.
Internal 2 KB Transmit and 2 KB Receive data FIFOs
IEEE 802.3 10BASE-T compatible transceiver
IEEE 802.3u 100BASE-TX compatible transceiver
IEEE 802.3u Auto Negotiation configured by EEPROM
Full Duplex support for 10 and 100 Mb/s data rates
144-pin TFQP package.
Low Power +3.3V CMOS design with typical consumption of 561 mW during
operation, 380 mW in WOL mode, 33 mW in sleep mode.
Auto-Negotiation
Fast Link Pulse (FLP) Bursts provide the signaling required to Auto-negotiate a
connection between two devices at each end of a link segment. The DP83815
supports four different Ethernet Protocols:
10 Mb/s Half Duplex
10 Mb/s Full Duplex
100 Mb/s Half Duplex
100 Mb/s Full Duplex
Auto-Negotiation ensures that the highest performance protocol will be selected
based on the ability of the hub/switch the WS4 is connected to.
Half-duplex is the traditional mode of operation which relies on the CSMA/CD
protocol to handle network access and collisions. The physical layer responds to
both transmit and receive activity in order to maintain compliance with the IEEE
802.3 specification.
The DP83815 is also capable of supporting full-duplex switch applications with a
throughput of up to 200 Mb/s per port when operating in the 100BASE-TX mode.
Because the CSMA/CD protocol does not apply to full-duplex operation, the
DP83815 disables its internal collision sensing and reporting functions when in
this mode.
