Operational Troubleshooting

This chapter describes in detail the Workstation 4 LX boot sequence, provides
troubleshooting information, voltage test points and POST errors for the Workstation
4 LX System Board ABRD86.

Workstation 4 LX Boot Sequence

The following procedure provides a detailed description of the boot sequence.
1. Connect the AC Power cord to AC inlet at the rear of the workstation. If available,
connect the workstation to a LAN. Press and release the power button. The
Operator LED should start flashing Blue once per second.
Does the Operator LED start flashing Blue?
If YES, Proceed to Step 2.
If YES, but the Operator LED is Yellow or Amber - this is a WS4 System
Board - See Chapter 3.
If NO, see Testing the Power Supply on page 5-9.
If the Power Button sticks, see page 5-18.
2. The Operator LED should flash Blue, and at almost the same time, the backlights
should illuminate, followed by the BIOS splash screen with MICROS logo.
Does the BIOS Splash Screen appear on the LCD?
If YES, proceed to Step 3.
If NO, does the system board beeper sound more than once? This indicates a
BIOS POST failure. See Figure 5-4.
If NO, is the Operator LED solid Blue? This condition is accompanied by
other symptoms such as blank screen. The unit does not respond to the power
button.
Comments: The BIOS Splash screen remains visible for about 20 -22 seconds.
The BIOS initializes all hardware and runs a standard Power On Self Test
(POST) of all System Board Components. Next, a series of custom pre-boot
firmware applications are executed before unit attempts to boot. The first is a
custom POST to detect the presence of a CF card and USB Flash Disk,
followed by others that are used to perform operating system or BIOS
updates.
The 'normal' boot time (assuming a platform update does not occur) from
pressing the power button to seeing the Windows Embedded CE 6.0 Desktop
is about one minute and ten seconds.
5-4
Corrupt BIOS chip, U35 P/N 100111-010 or damaged BIOS chip socket.
Try re-seating the BIOS chip in the system board socket.
Defective System Board.
If the Operator LED is solid Amber - this is a Workstation 4 - See Chapter
3.
