IDN Port Problems

Symptoms: When using the DiagUtility's IDN Print test, or attempting print from the
application, the IDN printer does not print or prints erratically. In other cases, printing
may occur, but the application does not receive confirmation. The following assumes
you are working with a patch cable and IDN printing device that is known to be
functional.
One or more open fuseable resistors, fuses, or clamping diodes in the IDN circuit. On
all system board revisions, the CF Daughter Card must be removed to access these
devices.
COM4 (RS422-A): On the AB28-F and AB28-G boards, check R3, R4, R20,
and R21. These are through-hole devices, so it's best to remove the system
board in order to get the meter probes on the device. Each resistor should read
about 15Ω. The AB28-I board uses surface mount devices; removing the
board is not required. Check F8, F13, F14, and F15 for a reading of 2 or 3Ω.
On all revisions, check surface mount clamping diodes D7, D8, D9, and D10
for shorts or open continuity.
COM5 (RS422-B): On the AB28-F and AB28-G boards, check R5, R6, R26,
and R27. These are through-hole devices, so it's best to remove the system
board in order to get the meter probes on the device. Each resistor should read
about 15Ω. The AB28-I and ABRD36 boards use surface mount devices;
removing the system board to test is not required. Check F9, F10, F11, and
F12 for a reading of 2 or 3Ω. On all revisions, check surface mount clamping
diodes D11, D12, D13, and D14 for shorts or open continuity.
Defective RS422 Transceiver. If the fuseable resistors, fuses, and clamping diodes
check out, the associated Transmit Receiver device could be damaged.
COM4 (RS422-A): Replace U9/U10.
COM5 (RS422-B): Replace U6/U5.
Defective or damaged IDN Module in the printer.
Substitute the IDN module.

RS232 Peripheral Device Does Not Function

Symptom: An RS232 peripheral connected to the RS422-A or RS422-B port does not
function.
Examine the pins on the 8-pin modular connector(s). If a 6-pin RJ-11 connector is
plugged into the 8-pin port, the smaller connector body can push the RS232 pins
(1 and 8) out of position. Later, when the RJ-11 connector is removed, the pins do
not spring back into position, preventing the RS232 interface from functioning.
In most cases, this does not permanently damage the interface; the RS232 pins can
be carefully moved into the correct position by using a dental pick or other long
sharp object.
