It is intended for qualified technicians who install, maintain, and repair communications systems and implementors who program the system.     Installation and MERLIN LEGEND System Programming Number of MERLIN Attendants Required If a customer is using the MERLIN Attendant only for backup call handling or night service, only one MERLIN Attendant is required unless call volume is heavy, as shown in Table 1-4. When call traffic is heavy, the number of MERLIN Attendants required at a site depends on the number of calls the customer receives during peak hours.

If a secondary extension is not programmed, callers hear the Transfer Fail announcement when the first extension is busy or does not answer. When the business is closed, the Night Secondary Extension is the number that the MERLIN Attendant dials when it cannot connect the caller to the Night Primary Extension.

Call transfers to extensions can be expedited when the MERLIN Attendant knows which extensions are valid in the MERLIN LEGEND system and what the maximum number of digits are in an extension (two to four).
