How and Where
On the Quick Setup web page, you can select the wizard for
Windows (SMB) to configure the following. (Clicking the wizard's
Server Appears
Finish button causes the server to restart for the settings to take
effect.)
To change the server name to text that is easy for your clients to
identify, set the SMB Server Name for the Windows (SMB) network
environment. The default is HP hhhhhh , where hhhhhh are the last
6 digits of the server's LAN hardware (MAC) address. Characters
that Microsoft does not allow in the name are:
, : ; ? " * \ | [ ] < > ^ + =
So that the server will appear in your existing SMB domains or
workgroups, change the Workgroup name. Characters that
Microsoft does not allow in the name are the same as above.
Access Rights:
By default, all users have access to all the discs on all the drives on
Windows
the server, and the system files are protected by the server
password. You can restrict user access to drives, to individual discs,
Security
and to the server configuration. Specific passwords can be
configured for SMB user-level or share-level access control. You can
limit the number of users simultaneously accessing any disc to
comply with user-license restrictions. And we recommend that you
restrict access to the root and System folders on the server.
Access restrictions are set individually for each protocol. If you use
other network protocols in addition to SMB, consult the other
chapters for setup of those protocols. The default settings in some
protocols provide full access rights to all users, so we recommend
that you disable all protocols not being used. If you do not, a user
accessing the server through such a protocol may be given full
access rights, regardless of the security configurations in other
protocols.) See "Disabling Access for Other Protocols" on page 4-11.
Server Password
If HTTP (providing web access) remains enabled, it is important
that you change the server password to protect the system files.
For example, users are prompted for the server password when
trying to access the Administration and Quick Setup web pages for
the first time during a session. Under the Administration tab, click
the This Server button and with the server module highlighted,
click the Settings button. On the resulting page, select the General
tab. Change and confirm the password. Click Save. This new
password takes effect without restarting the server.
