2 Caching and Archiving Using the Hard Disk
Cache Modes
Partial
The directory structure on the discs is cached. This speeds up
browsing directories and finding files. By default, this mode
also includes caching of the frequently accessed files on the
discs. The disk space allocated for file caching can be reduced to
zero to suspend file caching; then only directory caching is done.
Mirror
The full image of all disc data is cached. Mirroring speeds up
frequent access and access by multiple users. The image is
available only as long as the disc is in the CD-ROM drive.
None
No caching is performed. Archiving can still be performed,
however (see "Archiving and Replacing Discs" on page 8-3).
The cache mode has no impact on archiving (see "Archiving and
Replacing Discs" on page 8-3 and "Disk Space for Caching and
Archiving" on page 8-6).
The factory-default cache mode is partial caching with file caching
of 500 megabytes.
You can change the default cache mode for the server by using the
Administration web page. Under the Administration tab, click the
This Server button and with the server module highlighted, click
the Settings button. Then select the Caching and Archiving tab.
Your choices are listed below. The caching will be started as a
background activity as soon as a disc is inserted into a drive.
For no caching, change the Cache Mode to None. Then,
directories and files on the discs will not be cached.
For directory caching only, set Cache Mode to Partial and Disk
space for file caching to 0 (zero). Then only the directory
structure and not the files will be cached.
For file and directory caching, set Cache Mode to Partial and set
the amount of space for file caching. Then the directories and
frequently accessed files will be cached.
For full mirroring of all discs, set Cache mode to Mirror. All disc
data will be cached.
For managing disk space usage, see "Disk Space for Caching and
Archiving" on page 8-6.
