User-Level Access Control
You can implement user-level security authenticated by an NT
domain controller. A user logging in to the server must provide her
identity (name and domain) and password. The server uses this
information to validate the user identity against the primary
domain controller (PDC). It actually logs in to the PDC, reads the
user's group membership, and then logs out. If its login is
successful, the user is allowed access to the server.
For SMB, the server maintains an administrator account that is
never authenticated against the primary domain controller,
because some method of access must be maintained in case the PDC
becomes unavailable.
To set this access control mode, use the Quick Setup tab and select
either the Wizard or the Detailed View for Windows (SMB). On the
properties page, select User level. Then specify the Authentication
Domain containing the controller.
Setting the Passwords. Then using the Administration tab,
select the Discs and Drives button. Select the Discs and file system
view. For each of the discs and for the root and for the volumes
folder, you will see an icon in the Access Rights column. Click on
that icon to display an Access Rights properties page. Select the
Windows Sharing tab. The Windows share name for the volume can
be specified on this page, and it becomes the volume name (same as
Name under the General tab. Set the rights and passwords for
access here.
Controlling Access by Drive. On the Access Rights property
page, you can opt to associate the access rights by drive, for
whatever disc in is the drive. Click "Drive" for "Use the access
rights and properties of". Then the disc's volume name (see
page 4-13) will be changed to the default SCSI name, such as
CD-id2lun0. You can change this name using the Name field on this
property page. As a result, the icon in the Access Rights column will
illustrate the key on top of a drive rather than a disc. (For
HP J4150A: If this disc is then archived, the share name reverts to
the disc's volume name.)
