OPERATION
Models 8084/8084AD/8085 Closed Caption Encoder Manual
Separate Field 1 and Field 2 caption keyer ON/OFF buttons were placed
on the front panel to allow the insertion of XDS in field 2 without introducing
delay in the field 1 captions through re-encoding. An operator could
unknowingly use this feature to insert data in field 2 when there was no
caption waveform present in field 1 at all. This is contrary to EIA-608-B,
and will cause some XDS decoders to shut down.
If there is no field 1 caption waveform present upstream and the field 2
keyer is on, the field 1 keyer will be forced on and the FLD 1 LED will blink.
This will cause a line 21 field 1 caption waveform to be present whenever
line 21 field 2 caption waveform is present on the video consistent with
EIA-608-B rules. When the field 1 keyer has been forced on and upstream
Field 1 captions resume, the Field 1 Keyer will turn off again.

3.1.2.2 Keyer Control on Early 8084 Encoders

CAPTION ON / OFF Toggles the caption keyer on or off. When the keyer
is off, the device will merely clock the video through its internal
registers and route it to the video output. When the encoder is
turned back on, both the Fld 1 and Fld 2 Enable LED's will
indicate if the respective keyer is enabled or not.
commands received by the 8084(AD) may turn the keyer on or
off.
SHIFT + CAPTION ON / OFF Locks the caption keyers Off.
commands received via the serial ports will not turn the keyers
on when they are in the locked mode.

Status Indicator Lights

There are either six or eight status indicators, depending on the encoder
model, located on the front panel. These show the operational status of the
caption encoder at a glance. The meanings of all LEDs that may be found
on the front panel are as follows:
525 VIDEO IN
625 VIDEO IN
Shows
standard, the standard detected by the encoder, and whether
video is present. If an LED is on steady, that is the current video
standard and video is present. If it is blinking, it indicates that a
valid video signal is not present. If one LED is on steady but the
other is blinking, video is present but the encoder has detected
that the video standard is not set correctly.
SDI VIDEO IN
When lit, the caption encoder has detected incoming
component digital video of the correct standard. When the LED
is flashing, SDI video is detected but the video standard is not
correct. When off, no incoming video has been detected at the
SDI VIDEO IN connector.
