OPERATION
Models 8084/8084AD/8085 Closed Caption Encoder Manual
The field monitor display is accessible by pressing the
F1KEY F2KEY
SHIFT +
The message to the right of the F1 indicates what is
happening to the data in Field 1. The message to the
right of the F2 indicates what is happening to the data in
field 2.
Return to the normal front panel displays by pressing the
SHIFT +
This message will alternate with other displays to
MODEM D ONLINE
indicate that the 8084(AD) is on-line with the built-in
modem D.
MODEM D DISABLED This message will alternate with other displays to
indicate that Modem D is not in auto-answer mode,
either because of the menu configuration or parallel port
GPI.
This message will alternate with other displays to
A DISABLED
indicate that Port A is disabled because of a parallel port
GPI. All input on Port A will be ignored while in this
mode. Similar messages may appear for other ports.
NONSENSE CC F1

sequences when encoded in the video. These front panel error
messages may appear when the encoder is reading upstream
caption data. They indicate that the first byte of a first byte of a
command was received, but the second byte was not a valid
command value for any command.
KEYERS LOCKED will be displayed when the operator attempts to turn the
caption keyers On or Off while they are locked.
When the modem is enabled, the front panel display will show various
messages received from the modem such as CONNECT
NO CARRIER or OKOKOK.
ATSC OVERFLOW The 8085 includes an additional error message: ATSC
OVERFLOW,
compression
sufficiently often, and some caption data (null or
otherwise) has accumulated to the point of overflowing
the 8085's delay buffer. Some caption data has been
lost due to the insufficient polling.

described in section 4.2.5.
