1. The battery in your vehicle has a negative earth and a 12 volt rating. The battery in
the other vehicle must also have a negative earth and a 12 volt rating.
2. Position the two vehicles so they are not touching, apply the park brakes, place the
shift lever in the P (park) position (automatic) or the N (neutral) position (manual).
Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and switch off all the lamps and
accessories in both vehicles, except the hazard warning flasher or any lamps
needed for the work area.
3. Attach one end of the red jumper lead
to the positive terminal of the booster
battery (identified by a red colour +)
and the other end of the red jumper
lead to the positive terminal of the
flat battery.
4. Attach one end of the black jumper lead to the negative terminal of the booster
battery (identified by a black colour, –) and the other end of the black jumper
lead to a solid stationary, metallic point on the engine of the vehicle with the
flat battery.
Note Do not connect directly to the negative terminal of the battery, as this could
cause sparks.
5. When making all connections ensure the jumper lead clamps do not touch each
other. Also, ensure the jumper leads are not on or near pulleys, fans or other points
that will move when the engine is started.
6. Start the engine in the assisting vehicle and run the engine at a moderate speed.
Then start the engine with the flat battery. Attempts to start the engine with the flat
battery should be made at one minute intervals and should not last longer than
15 seconds.
7. After starting, allow both engines to idle for approximately 3 minutes with the leads
still connected.
8. Leave the engine running while removing the jumper leads in the exact reverse
order they were installed. While removing each clamp, ensure it does not touch any
other metal while the other end remains attached.
