Chapter 1
Introduction

Data backup is essential to protect irreplaceable information. Backing up
data to magnetic tape is an easy, cost-efficient method used by many
small and medium businesses. However, most enterprises have so much
data that a single backup tape is not enough; the information has to be
spread across numerous tapes. To avoid constantly changing tapes
manually, many tape backup systems include Quantum autoloaders.
Quantum autoloaders provide a compact, high capacity, and low cost
method for simple, unattended data backup.
The autoloader is compatible with popular operating systems such as
Windows, MAC OSX, Linux, and environments that support FTP and
Ethernet interfaces.
The Quantum SuperLoader 3A Series autoloader contains an A-Series

tape drive and one or two tape magazines holding up to eight cartridges
each. Up to sixteen data cartridges can be used with two magazines.
A single cartridge can be inserted directly into an empty tape drive via a
password-protected mailslot or into an empty magazine slot.
The Quantum A-Series Tape Drives are an extension to the family of
products with video professionals in mind. Using the built-in FTP client
in conjunction with a standard Web browser, Material Exchange Format
(MXF) files can be stored and retrieved. A Gigabit Ethernet (GigE)
interface allows these drives to be quickly connected and accessed on
your network.
