CABLE LENGTH

The maximum cable length is determined by the serial communication being used
and the baud rate.
• Maximum cable length for RS-232 at 19200 baud is 7 m (23').
• Maximum cable length for RS-485 at 19200 baud is 2 km (6561'8").
• Maximum cable length for PROFINET at 19200 baud is 100 m (328'1").
 Important
If the cable length is doubled, the baud rate needs to be reduced by 50%. For
example, if using RS-232 and the cable length is 14 m (45'11"), the baud rate
must be 9600 baud.

CONNECTING TO AN RS-232 INTERFACE

With RS-232, you can connect one converter box to a PC over short distances, but
transmissions could be affected by electromagnetic interferences. The recommended
maximum distance for RS-232 is 7 m (23') at 19200 baud. If your PC does not have
an RS-232 interface available, you need to either use an RS-232-to-USB adapter
(available from AE) or connect to an RS-485 interface instead.
Use either a connection cable from AE or use a customer-supplied cable to connect
directly to the terminal block on the converter box.
To Connect to an RS-232 Interface
1. Connect the TxD wire to pin 3 (DIG 3).
2. Connect the RxD wire to pin 4 (DIG 4).
3. Connect the ground wire to pin 5 (DIG 5).
4. Connect the cable to the PC via the serial or USB port.

CONNECTING TO AN RS-485 INTERFACE

With RS-485, you can connect up to 32 converter boxes (connected in a bus system)
to a PC over long distances without transmissions being affected by electromagnetic
interferences. If the RS-485 interface is not available on the PC, you will need to
use an RS-485-to-RS-232 converter (available from AE) to connect to the RS-232
interface.
 Important
Most of the commonly used converters are too slow for fast measuring
equipment like your Impac pyrometer, so AE recommends that you use the AE
converter (ordered separately). When using an RS-485-to-RS-232 converter,
make sure that the converter is fast enough at your required transmission rate
to receive the response from your pyrometer after an instruction from the
controller.
