Wheel Bolts
The wheel bolts must always be
clean and easy to turn when you're
removing or installing them. Never
oil or lubricate wheel bolts.
Check the wheel bolts whenever
you change a tire, and also each time
when you're switching between
summer and winter tires.
~WARNING
• The use of wheel bolts that do
not meet specifications of the ori-
ginal factory installed equipment
will adversely affect the safe oper-
ation of your vehicle and may cau-
se an accident and personal injury.
• If insufficient torque is used to
tighten wheel bolts, they can co-
me loose and cause an accident
during vehicle operation!
Extremely high torques can dama-
ge the wheel bolts and/or their
threads.
Tire rotation
If the front tires are worn more than rear
tires. then you must rotate the front tires
w ith the rear tires as shown in the illustra-
tion. By doing this, all tires will have approxi-
mately the same service life.

side of vehicle.
Only when tires show unusual wear such as
feather-edging should they be rotated diag-
onally. Your vehicle may be equipped with
tires which have a specified rotation direc-
tion. The rotation direction is identified by
arrow markings on the sides of the tires.
The rotation direction must not be reversed .
Therefore. these tires cannot be switched
diagonally. If in doubt. discuss any unusual
tire wear w ith your authorized VOLKSWA-
GEN dealer's service departm ent.
After rotation adjust tire pressure
and torque wheel bolts diagonally to
88ft lb (120 Nm). Refer to "Chan-
ging a wheel" on page 80 for details.
