Checking the engine oil level
The position of the oil dipstick and the en-
gine oil filler opening can be seen in the il-
lustrations beginning on page 40.
The best time to check the engine oil level
is when the oil is warm.
To get a true reading, the vehicle must be on
level ground.

Before you check anything

• After turning off the engine, wait a few
minutes for the oil to return to the oil pan.
• Pull out dipstick and wipe it clean with a
rag.
• Reinsert dipstick; push it all the way in.
• Pull dipst ick out again and read the level:
A - You must not add oil.
B- You c an add oil. The oil level may go into
t he A range, but not above the A range

regarding the correct oi specif ication and
viscosity for your engine. Always ask your
Service Advisor about the correct oil to use
when topping off your engine.
Important information for vehicles
with Diesel engines
Vehicles with Diesel engines require and
must always use special engine oil
that conforms to Volkswagen Oil Standard
505 01. Never use any other kind of engine
oil in your vehicle, not even to top off the oil
level. If you use engine oil that does
not expressly conform to Volks-
wagen Oil St andard 505 01, very
se-
rious and very expensive damage to
your vehicle's engine will occur. En-
gine damage caused by using the
wrong engine oil will not be covered
by your Limited New Vehicle War-
ranty. Not all commercia lly available oils
conform t o th is very rig id Volkswagen oil
quality standard even th ough they may
have the same viscosity.
