TIPS AND
ADVICE
At
the time of
printing,
we
are aware
that
Castrol®produces
an engine
oil that
con-
forms to
Volkswagen
Oil
Standard 505 01.
This oil
may
not yet be available throughout
North
America.
Other
oil
manufacturers
may offer engine oil that conforms
to
Volks-
wagen Oil Standard 505 01 at this time or at
some future
date. Please be
sure
to
consult
with
your
authorized
VOLKSWAGEN dealer
for information
on availability of the
proper
engine oil tor your vehicle's Diesel engine
and
tor the latest technical
information.
Because
this special engine oil may not
be
available when
you
need it,
we
strongly
rec-
ommend that you
always
carry with you ex-
tra
quart (liter) of oil that conforms to Volks-
wagen
Oil Standard 505 01,
in
case
you
have to top oft
the oil while
on
the
road.
For all engines
Turn oft
th
e engine.
• Unscrew
the oil cap from the cylinder
head
cover.
• Add
oi
l
by a half quart (halt liter) at a time.
• Check the
oil
level with the
dipstick.
The oil level must never be above the
A range - see page 45.
Otherwise
oil could be drawn
into
the crank-
case
breather and get into the atmosphere
through the exhaust system.
On vehicles
with a catalytic converter, the oil
would burn in the converter and
cause
damage.
~WARNING
Spilled oil is a fire
hazard.
The oil
filler cap must be secure to avoid
an oil spill.
Carefully screw
the
oil
cap
back
on and
1
insert
the
oil
dipstick
all the way.
Otherwise
oil
cou
ld leak
out
when
the engine is
run-
ning.

Change oil more often if you drive
mostly
short
distances, operate
