Unfastening the safety belt
• Push the orange release button on the
buckle. The belt tongue wi ll spring out of
the buckle .
• Let the belt to wind up on the retractor as
you guide belt tongue to its stowed posi-
tio n.
Belt pre-tensioner and load lim-
iter
The retractors for the front three-point safe-
ty belts and for the rear outboard three-
point safety belts are equipped w ith belt
pre-tensioners. The retractors for the front
three-point safety belts are also equipped
with load limiters.
Sensors activate the belt pre-tensioners in
frontal collisions when deceleration is high
enough . This tightens the belt and takes up
belt slack. Taking up the slack helps to re-
duce forward occupant movement during a
collision.
The belt pre-tensioner can only be activated
once.
The belt pre-tensioner will not activate in a
frontal collision when the deceleration is not
high enough, or in any side impact, rollover,
or rear-end collision .
The load limit er feature helps to reduce the
forces applied to the body in a crash.
SAFETY FIRST
Never let the belt remain over a rear
seat back that has been folded for-
ward. The rear belt tensioner will be
activated unnecessarily in an acci-
dent and then have to be replaced.
The belt tensioner will not activate in a light
frontal collision insufficient to actuat e the
t ensioner or in any side, rollover, or rear-end
collision.

• Safety belt systems including
belt tensioners cannot be
repaired. Special procedures are
required for removal and installa-
tion of this system. Therefore, any
wor k on the safety belt system
must be performed only by an
authorized VOLKSWAGEN dealer.
• The belt tensioner system
works for one accident only. If belt
tensioners have been activated,
the system must be replaced.
Notes
• When the saf ety belt tensioner is acti-
vated, a fi ne dust is released. This is normal
and is not caused by a fire in the vehicle.
• Observe all safety regulations if the ve-
hicle or individual parts of the system, par-
ticularly the safety belt or airbag, are to be
scrapped. Your authorized VOLKSWAGEN
dealers are familiar with th ese regulations
and can perform this service for you.
