TIPS AND ADVICE
New tires
New
tires
tend
to be slippery and cannot of-
fer
full
traction
unt
il they have been properly
broken
in.
~WARNING
New tires tend to be slippery and
must also be "broken-in." To help
avoid loss of control, always ope-
rate a vehicle with new tires at
lo-
wer speeds and with special cau-
tion for the first 350 miles (500 ki-
lometers).
Brake gently. Avoid
fol-
lowing closely behind other vehi-
cles or other situations that might
require sudden, hard braking.
Tire service life
The
service life of your tires depends for the
most part on the following factors:
Tire pressure
Required
cold
tire inflation pressures are
listed on a sticker on the driver's door lock
jamb.
~WARNING
Incorrect
tire pressures
can lead
to a serious or
fatal accident:
Incorrect
tire
pressures cause
increased tire
wear and
can
affect
handling of
the
vehicle.
Incorrect pressures
can also
lead
to
sudden
tire failure and
deflation, causing loss
of
vehicle
control.
dih
Low
tire
pressures increase fuel
I
~
consumption which is detrimen-
tal
to the environment.
lire
pressures should be checked at least
once
a
month and always before a
long
trip.
Tire pressures
are
very
important,
particularly when
the
vehicle is
driv-
en at higher speeds.
Vehicles which have
full hub caps have
valve
extenders instead
of
dust caps.
To
check tire
pressure
or to add
air,
you do
not
need
to
remove
the
extender.
Always check
tire pressures when
the
tires
I
are cold. When the
tires are warm, the
pres-
sure
will
be higher.
Do
not
reduce the
pressure of warm
tires.
Don't
forget
to
check the spare wheel.
Use an
accurate
tire
pressure
gauge when
checking inflation
pressures.
Never
exceed
the
maximum
tire inflation pressure listed
on the
tire
sidewall.
Cold
tire inflation pres-
sure
means: the vehicle
has
been standing
for
at least
3 hours or
driven
for less
than
1
mile (1
km).
Do
not
forget
to
reinstall the
valve
stem
caps after
checking tire
pressure.
