Upgrading the Software Image

This section describes the supported upgrade methods and procedures required to
successfully upgrade an HSG80 array controller ACS from Version 8.6 to Version 8.7.
ACS Version 8.7 supports both dual-redundant controller rolling upgrade and
dual-redundant controller shutdown upgrade methods. The rolling upgrade method
allows the host system to continue I/O activity, with minimal impact, while each
controller is upgraded. The shutdown upgrade method takes the storage devices
offline for a period of time while the software is upgraded simultaneously on both
controllers.
CAUTION: Failure to follow these upgrade procedures could result in the loss of data,
or the controller could be left in an unusable state. Completely read and understand all
of the required steps prior to beginning an upgrade procedure.
Do not use the procedures in this guide in an attempt to upgrade from ACS Version 8.3
or 8.4 to ACS Version 8.7. Significant down-time and data loss can result.
IMPORTANT: Rolling upgrades are supported when upgrading using any of the following
scenarios:
• 8.6F to 8.7F, 8.7S, or 8.7P
• 8.6G to 8.7G, 8.7F, 8.7S, or 8.7P
• 8.6S to 8.7S or 8.7P
• 8.6P to 8.7P
• 8.6L to 8.7L
Shutdown upgrades are supported when transitioning from any ACS version supported by
rolling upgrades, plus the following:
• 8.5F to 8.7F, 8.7S, or 8.7P
• 8.5G to 8.7G, 8.7F, 8.7S, or 8.7P
• 8.5S to 8.7S or 8.7P
• 8.5P to 8.7P
• 8.5L to 8.7L
• 8.5S to 8.7F or 8.7G
• 8.5P to 8.7S
• 8.6S to 8.7F or 8.7G
• 8.6P to 8.7S
IMPORTANT: Any other ACS version upgrade is not supported.
Before beginning an upgrade procedure, determine which upgrade method to use:
• Rolling Upgrade—This method allows I/O activity to continue during the
upgrade by using the failover capabilities of the controllers. Only one controller at
a time is shut down to perform the upgrade, allowing the host system full access to
the disk devices during the upgrade with minimal impact to the host systems.
