2.1.2.1 Definition of terms
AFB (Automatic Forearm Balance)
The AFB flexion aid stores the energy that is released when the prosthetic arm is extended and
uses it to assist with flexion. The complex mechanism of the flexion aid controls the dynamics of
forearm movement and equalises the leverage forces that develop via a compensation gear. As a
result, the patient only has to exert minimal force on the flexion cable or through body momentum.
The compensation coefficient can be easily adjusted to the individual weight of the prosthetic
forearm and different clothing.
Lock
The product is either locked mechanically or electronically (see page 13). The internal ratchetless
lock can be unlocked or locked in any position, even under a load. The product has a load capa
city of up to 230 N in the locked state (this value may decline over the course of several years due
to wear and tear). The lock will slip under higher loads.
Mechanical lock
A strong pull on the cable (audible clicking sound) locks or unlocks the joint.
Thanks to the integrated compensation mechanism, the lock can be released with little effort,
even under load. The integrated strain relief reduces the risk of damage when the pull cable is
pulled too hard.
Electronic lock
The lock can be released and engaged using electrode signals or switch signals (depending on
the chosen switching version).
Slip-stop function
The slip-stop function makes it possible to lower the forearm in a controlled manner without hav
ing to fully release the lock.
Slip-stop function, mechanical
A gentle pull on the cable (no audible click) unlocks the product so the forearm can be moved
continuously. When the pull on the cable stops, the product is locked again.
Slip-stop function, electronic
The slip-stop function is activated by the electrode signals (depending on the chosen control ver
sion). When the electrode signal stops, the product is locked again.
