The procedure is as follows:
▪ Connect the EMG cable/leads to the CIM (see § 2.5.5), Luna module (see
§ 2.5.6), WPM (see § 2.5.7), or WPU (see § 2.5.8).
▪ Position two EMG surface electrodes on either side of the anal sphincter:
o With a gloved hand, spread the buttocks until the entire anal
sphincter is visualized. Any hair that might be under the patches
should be removed.
o Thoroughly clean the anal sphincter area with alcohol. NOTE: it is
extremely important that all oil, hair, and foreign material is removed
from this area before electrodes are placed.
o Without releasing the buttocks, dry the area free of any remaining
moisture from the alcohol pad.
o Place the EMG electrode patches directly ON opposing sides of the
sphincter. The patches should be placed ON the darker skinned area
of the anus.
▪ Position the reference electrode on the upper leg, after cleaning the area.
▪ Connect the surface electrodes to the guarded EMG cable.
▪ Ask the patient to squeeze the pelvic floor muscles and check the quality of
the EMG signal.
▪ If necessary, adjust the EMG sensitivity scale by pressing the EMG
sensitivity buttons in the software or on the remote control. This can be
done during the pre-test and the measurement. The default EMG sensitivity
is determined by the setting for the EMG scale in the investigation protocol.
