Introduction

Type 1 users require the ISDN INTERFACE UNIT TYPE 190 option.
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital
Network) allows you send and re-
ceive fax messages on high-speed
high-quality digital networks. It will
allow you to connect the machine to
an ISDN for either Group 4 or Group
3 fax communication.
A few of the features described earlier
in this manual cannot be used over an
ISDN. These are as follows.
• Manual reception
• Telephone line type (DTMF/Pulse
dial) selection
• Manual dialing with the handset
• On Hook Dial
• RTI, TTI, CSI (these identifiers can
only be used with Group 3 com-
munication. In Group 4 mode, an-
other identifier called the Terminal
ID is used instead. (see P.178 "Pro-
gramming the Terminal ID")
However, Group 4 has the following
major advantages over Group 3:
• If your organization sends large
volumes of material by fax, using
Group 4 will greatly reduce your
communication costs as a result of
the high speed of data transmis-
sion.
• Normal analog networks tend to
be noisy, affecting the quality of re-
ceived data. However, communi-
cations over digital networks are
of a high quality.
• The Group 4 interface will greatly
enhance other features, especially
broadcasting, transfer request, and

other networking features, allow-
ing complex distribution of docu-
ments with just a few keystrokes.
The types of network that you can
set up are described in the Net-
working section of this manual
(see P.208 "Initial Settings (Function
61)").
When connecting to the ISDN you
should use the provided cable. If a
different cable is used, this could
cause radio interference with other
equipment.
Attached to the modular cord that is
used for the ISDN connection, there is
a ferrite core - please do not remove it.
Note
Your sales or service representa-
tive will be able to help program
all the necessary group and trans-
fer station numbers in the various
broadcasting terminals through-
out your proposed network. Please
coordinate with your sales repre-
sentative to obtain correct pro-
gramming at
installation.
