Removing the time-of-day battery from the 9040-MR9
To remove the time-of-day battery, complete the steps in this procedure.
1. Ensure that you have the electrostatic discharge (ESD) wrist strap on and that the ESD clip is plugged
into a ground jack or connected to an unpainted metal surface. If not, do so now.
2. Access the Advanced System Management Interface (ASMI).
Attention: During this procedure: Do not reset the service processor, do not remove the service
processor card, and do not power off and power on the system.
3. In the navigation area, select Concurrent maintenance > TOD Battery.
4. Verify that the location code is selected then press Continue.
5. In the ASMI Battery Panel window, press Remove Battery.
6. If the operation was successful, the window displays Successfully removed the TOD battery. You can
then remove the battery.
7. Remove the time-of-day battery cover (A), then grasp the time-of-day battery (B) and pull it out of its
slot as shown in the following figures.
Attention: While removing the battery, do not use a metallic tool to disengage it from its slot.
CAUTION:
• After removing the failed time-of-day battery, do not:
– Burn or charge the battery (to avoid possible explosion as the battery contains lithium).
– Throw or immerse the battery in water.
– Heat the battery to more than 100 ⁰C (212 ⁰F).
– Repair or disassemble the battery.
• Exchange the battery only with the IBM-approved part. Recycle or discard the battery as
instructed by local regulations. In the United States, IBM has a process for the collection of
this battery. For information, call 1-800-426-4333. Have the IBM part number for the battery
unit available when you call.
a) Remove the time-of-day battery cover (A).
