Installing memory modules in the 9040-MR9 system
To install memory modules in a system, complete the steps in this procedure.
Before you install a feature, ensure that the software that is required to support the feature is installed on
your system. For more information about software prerequisites, see the Power Systems Prerequisites
website (https://www14.software.ibm.com/support/customercare/iprt/home). If the required software is
not installed, see the following websites to download it, and then install it before you continue:
• To download firmware updates, software updates, and fixes, see the Fix Central website (http://
www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/).
• To download Hardware Management Console (HMC) updates and fixes, see the Hardware Management
Console Support and downloads website (https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/set2/sas/f/hmcl/
home.html).

If your system is managed by the Hardware Management Console (HMC), use the HMC to complete the
steps for installing a memory module in the system. For instructions, see Installing a part by using the
HMC (www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER9/p9haj/hmcinstall.htm).
If your system is not managed by an HMC, complete the steps in the following procedures to install a
memory module in the system.
Preparing the 9040-MR9 system to install memory modules
To prepare the system to install memory modules, complete the steps in this procedure.
1. Determine the slots in which you want to install the memory modules.
See "Plugging rules for memory modules in the 9040-MR9 system" on page 207 to understand the
plugging rules and to ensure that you plug the memory modules in the correct sequence. Record the
plugging order of the memory module slots for the installation.
2. Identify the part and the system that you are working on. For instructions, see Identifying a
part (www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/POWER9/p9haj/sal.htm).
Use the blue identify LED on the enclosure to locate the system. Ensure that the serial number of the
system matches the serial number to be serviced.
3. Stop the system. For instructions, see Stopping a system (www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/
POWER9/p9haj/crustopsys.htm).
4. Label and disconnect the power source from the system by unplugging the power cords from the
system.
