Airbags

The m ost effective occupant re­
straint system yet developed for
use in production vehicles is the
seat belt. In som e cases, however,
the protective effect of a seat belt
can be further enhanced by an
airbag.
The driver airbag is located in the
steering wheel hub. The passenger
airbag is located in the dashboard
ahead of the passenger.

The side im pact airbags are locat­
ed in the front doors. In conjunction
with wearing the seat belts with
em ergency tensioning retractors,
the airbags can provide increased
protection for the driver and
passenger in certain m ajor frontal
(for front airbags) and side impacts
(for side im pact airbags).
The operational readiness of the
airbag system is verified by the in­
dicator lamp "S R S" in the instru­
m ent cluster. If no fault is detected,
the lam p will go out after approxi­
m ately 4 seconds; after the lamp
goes out, the system continues to
m onitor the com ponents and
circuitry of the airbag system and
will indicate a m alfunction by
com ing on again.
The follow ing system com ponents
are m onitored or undergo a self­
check: crash-sensor(s), airbag igni­
tion circuits, front seat belt buckles,
em ergency tensioning retractors,
seat sensor (when present).
Initially, when the electronic key is
turned from steering lock position 0
to positions 1 or 2, m alfunctions in
the crash-sensor are detected and
indicated (the "S R S " indicator lamp
stays on longer than 4 seconds). In
the operational m ode, after the
