Certain system s o f the engine
serve to keep the toxic com po
nents of the exhaust gases within
perm issible lim its required by law.
These system s, of course, will
function properly only when
maintained strictly according to
factory specifications. Any adjust
m ents on the engine should,
therefore, be carried out only by
qualified M ercedes-Benz autho
rized dealer technicians. Engine
adjustm ents should not be altered
in any way. M oreover, the specified
service jobs m ust be carried out
regularly according to M ercedes-
Benz servicing requirem ents. For
details refer to the Service Booklet.

Inhalation of exhaust gas is
hazardous to your health. All
exhaust gas contains carbon
m onoxide, and inhaling it can
cause unconsciousness and
lead to death.
Do not run the engine in con
fined areas (such as a garage)
which are not properly ven ti
lated. If you think that exhaust
gas fum es are entering the ve
hicle while driving, have the
cause determ ined and cor
rected im m ediately. If you
m ust drive under these condi
tions, drive only w ith at least
one w indow fully open.
O n-B oard D iagnostic System
The S equential M ultiport Fuel
Injection (SFI) control m odule
m onitors em ission control
com ponents that e ither provide
input signals to or receive output
signals from the control module.
M alfunctions resulting from
interruptions or failure of any of
these com ponents are indicated by
the "C H EC K E N G IN E " m alfunction
indicator lam p in the instrum ent
cluster and are sim ultaneously
stored in the diagnostic module.
If the "C H EC K E N G IN E " m alfunc
tion indicator lam p com es on, have
the system checked at your autho
rized M ercedes-Benz dealer as
soon as possible.
An on-board diagnostic connector
is located in the passenger com
partm ent near to the parking brake
pedal, allowing the accurate iden
tification of system m alfunctions
through the readout o f diagnostic
trouble codes.
